Detox Cleanse
Diet
A Good Detox Cleanse or
Detox Diet is a Great Way to Start a New
Diet and/or a New Fitness
Program
When most folks think of
the word detox, they probably envision some
sort of treatment for drug or alcohol
addictions but detox also refers to diets
and other procedures used to rid our bodies
of dietary and environmental toxins and
pollution with the goal of achieving ideal
health.
Popularity
With obesity on the rise and the
issue of healthcare constantly in the
news, more and more people are heading
back to the gym and getting back on
track with their diets. One particular
method that is rapidly (re)gaining
popularity is the detox cleanse or
detox diet as some people call it.
It is easy to see why
detox cleansing diets like the master (aka:
lemon) cleanse have gained so much
popularity in the last couple of years. You
have folks like Beyoncé telling Oprah
Winfrey that she lost 20 pounds using a
cleansing diet for her role in 'Dream
Girls'. Keep in mind that these methods are
not something that just made their way onto
the health landscape recently. Detox
cleanses and diets have been around since
the 19th century and really started gaining
popularity in the 70's when Stanley
Burroughs published his cleansing
manual.
At first glance, the
words ‘detox’ and ‘cleanse’ look very
appealing to someone thinking about their
health. We all know that toxins (anything
that has the potential of
harming body tissue) are bad so
anything that rids our body of toxins must
be good and if you are feeling slow, tired
or sluggish; how can you go wrong with a
‘cleanse’?
The Problem
With Popularity
Here is the problem; way
too many people are under the perception
that the detox cleanse is just another way
to lose weight and even though you can have
awesome weight loss results with a detox
cleanse or detox diet, you have to be sure
that you are doing it correctly and that
you are working with the right
information.
You can do great
harm to yourself if you do not
know what you are doing or if you are
working with the wrong information.

What Can Go Wrong
When a detox cleanse or
detox diet is not done correctly, the
results can be devastating to your health
and your body. If done improperly, too
often or even for too long, your body can
start to experience issues like mild to
severe breakdown of muscle (depending on
the length of your cleanse), dehydration,
vitamin and nutrient deficiencies and
problems with blood sugar levels.
Prolonged vitamin and
nutrient deficiencies from a detox diet can
lead to issues like a weakened immune
system and inflammation. A weakened immune
system can very easily lead to more
frequent sickness and infections.
Common Side
Effect
Even when you stick to
the book and do everything correctly, there
are some side effects that are very common
and almost expected. I would have to say
that the most common one is headaches
during the first few days. This is normally
attributed to caffeine withdrawal and
hence, most detox practitioners will advise
the you gradually decrease your caffeine
intake before you start a detox. This is
the main reason I tell all my clients that
are looking to do a detox to start on a
Thursday or Friday so they do not have to
deal with the headaches while at work.
Are you starting to see
why it is so important to be working with
the right information if you plan on

Our Body's
Role
Under ideal conditions,
our body uses organs like the liver,
kidneys, colon and intestines to eliminate
a lot of the harmful toxins and bacteria
that enter our bodies through the food we
drink, the air we breathe and the items we
touch. Other sources of toxins include
those that our own body produces durning
normal day to day activities, such as the
ammonia that is produced when our system
breaks down protein.
Without these organs
functioning properly, we would literally
poison our bloodstream and our tissues.
This internal poisoning leads to many
ailments including, but not limited to:
• Headaches and migraines
• Sluggishness, fatigue and
weakness
• Muscle soreness and joint pain
• Unhealthy looking and feeling
skin
• Gaining weight
• Bad breath
• Indigestion and heartburn
The human body was
designed to naturally detox and cleanse
itself but the fact is, we live in a fast
pace, fast food society where diet and
exercise have taken a back seat to a
healthy lifestyle. Our bodies become
overloaded and are not able to cleanse
themselves and keep up with pace at which
we are polluting it.
This is what makes a
Detox cleanse or detox diet vital and
important to our health. It allows our body
to take a time out and it allows it to
channel its energy away from the process of
food consumption, digestion and
metabolizing. It allows it to channel all
its energy at detoxing and cleansing
everything from our skin, our organs, our
tissue and our bloodstream.

Like so many other
health fads and diets that we have seen
come and go, if a Detox cleanse is not done
properly, it can have harmful side effects.
There are many Detox diet’s and cleanses on
the market today so let’s take a look at
what exactly is involved in this.
The
Basics
The basic idea behind a
Detox diet or cleanse is to give up certain
kinds of foods (or solid food altogether in
some cases) and this is usually
accomplished by fasting for a specified and
temporary period of time. The purpose
behind this is to minimize the amount of
chemicals, bacteria and toxins that are
being ingested during the cleanse.
There is an emphasize
placed on consuming products that are able
to provide the body with the appropriate
nutrients, vitamins and antioxidant's it
needs to function properly and help
supercharge the detoxing process. The
purpose is to draw out and eliminate the
buildup of toxins our bodies have
accumulated by increasing the frequency of
urination and bowel movements.
As far as frequency is
concerned, I normally recommend that you
put yourself through a detox at least twice
a year with no more than 4 times evenly
spaced out.
What to Expect
When it is Over
When you complete your
detox, these are some of the results that
you should expect:
As with most things
involving your health, you should speak
with your doctor or health professional if
you have any questions or any kind of
medical history and are uncertain about the
possible side effects you can experience
during a cleanse.
